How: Lemon & Lime Ice Cubes

Event: Housewarming
Difficulty: Easy Peasy
Materials Needed: Muffin pan, 6 lemons and/or limes, water
Time Needed: Overnight

Place lemon and lime slices in muffin pan.
Carefully fill muffin pan with water and freeze.

Instructions:
  1. Make sure that there is a big, level space in your freezer for the muffin pan.
  2. Thinly slice up lemons and limes.
  3. Place two or three slices of lemon and/or lime in each section of the muffin tin.
  4. Carefully fill the muffin pan with water.
  5. Freeze overnight.
  6. Pop out a few of the ice cubes and place in a large pitcher.  Add water or iced tea.
Notes:
You could also make these ice cubes with iced tea so that they don't dilute your beverage as they melt.

  4. Has anyone actually did this? Seems like it would be difficult to remove the cubes once frozen.

  5. I definitely had the same concern about the ice cubes being difficult to remove but they just pop right out once frozen!

If for some reason they don't pop right out, run some luke warm water over the back of the muffin pan and that should do the trick.

  8. I was worried they wouldn't pop out so I used a silicone muffin pan and it works great!

  9. Brittnie - Glad that the silicone muffin pan works too! When I made the lemon and lime ones, they popped right out of my metal pan but when I made ones with cucumber slices, for some reason they didn't all pop right out. I ran hot water for a few seconds along the back of the pan and that worked!

  10. how long do the cubes last? does freezing the citrus keep it for long?

  11. hey...hoping you can help! i did this as it was a great solution for our office for when clients visit. We don't always have a fresh lemon available, so this was the perfect solution. The problem is that we have used them 2-3 times and each time the water tasted awful! What are we doing wrong? We used fresh lemons and are using filtered water. It really was a nasty taste when the ice melted. Any suggestions?

    1. The taste is because of using a metal, tin or foil muffin pan. Use the silicone muffin cups and it should help take that taste away. Also make sure you wash the lemons/limes really good before slicing them up!! Pour a little water in first, then put the lemon/lime slices and then top with water.... Hope this helps and fixes it for you!!

  12. Tammi - I was a little stumped with your problem but did some Internet sleuthing and, if the cubes turned out bitter, it was probably the pilth (the white part under the rind). You may want to try adding some lemon juice and strips of rind to the cubes. You won't get the look of slices but you should get the lemon flavor and a little flavor, without the bitterness. I hope this helps!

  13. ...that should have been, "the lemon flavor and a little color." :)

  15. I love the look & the idea! Thanks. I hope my question isn't too obvious to everyone else but does it really have the lemon/lime taste or is just for looks? I love the flavor from lime & lemon in my water. I am going to do this this weekend for one of the drinks for a shower.

    1. Great question! The lemons/limes flavor the water as they freeze so when they are added to a pitcher they flavor that water as well. :)

  18. I have been just slicing the limes and lemons and throwing them in a baggie then freezing them. This works well also and they don't stick together. I just drop one or two in the drink of choice!

  20. If you boil the water before you freeze and let cool before you add the lemon slices the ice cubes are clear vs. cloudy....

    1. Generally, they pop out quite easily but if they give you any trouble I recommend running the bottom of the muffin tin under some luke warm water.

  23. If you flash freeze the fruit prior to placing in muffin tin that will also relieve the bitter taste. To flash freeze place slices (dry them a bit after washing) on a metal cookie sheet and place in freezer for 1 hour....then continue with making your ice cubes.
